Rihla [Journey] A New Tarot Deck by Hyunju Kim Launching Friday 6 March, 6pm to 8pm

The Rihla Tarot Deck is a complete deck of 78 cards designed by Korean-Australian artist Hyunju Kim, and takes influence from classical antiquity, medieval alchemy,South Asian miniature painting, Islamic art, and European folklore.The title comes from the Arabic word for journey, and refers to the travel writings of the explorer Ibn Battuta, who over 30 years travelled an estimated 120,000 km through Africa, India, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Central Asia.This exhibition presents the full suite of 78 watercolour and pencil drawings, as wellas launching the Rihla Tarot Deck.

Hyunju Kim studied printmaking at Visva-Bharati University, India and painting at Dankook University, Seoul. Kim works primarily with etching and drawing. Her magical realism splits worlds and brings different realities together. Her works combine nature, mythology, and the imagination. Travels through the diverse cultures of the world are a rich source for her ideas.

Since graduating Kim has exhibited in the Egypt, India, Australia, Korea, China, Pakistan, Nepal, France, Serbia and Slovakia, and undertaken residencies in countries including Egypt, Greece, India, Australia, China, France, Nepal, Serbia, Serbia and Switzerland.
